The order things have to happen in

Skip a step or reverse two of them and you get a result that does not match. This is the sequence, and it is why starting a month out rarely works.

  1. Health before appearance

    Active decay and inflamed gums are dealt with first. Bonding porcelain to an unhealthy foundation is how good work fails early, and swollen gum tissue moves after it settles, which changes where the edges of a restoration should sit.

  2. Whitening, if it is part of the plan

    Natural teeth are lightened before any new porcelain is made, because porcelain does not change color afterward. Shade is then matched to the result rather than to where you started. How whitening works.

  3. A settling period

    Shade after whitening drifts slightly for a while before it stabilizes. Matching to a color that is still moving produces a mismatch you will notice in photographs later.

  4. The restorative work itself

    Veneers or porcelain crowns are prepared, made at a laboratory, then fitted and adjusted. Two visits with a wait in the middle.

The conservative option is often the right one

Not every complaint needs porcelain. A chipped edge can frequently be repaired with bonded composite in one visit, removing almost no tooth. Mild crowding sometimes responds better to clear aligners than to covering crooked teeth with veneers, which is a decision about whether you want the teeth moved or disguised.

Enamel does not grow back, and that is the whole argument for doing the smallest thing that solves the actual complaint. At a consultation you will hear what is achievable and what each route would cost you in tooth structure, not just in appointments.

What to bring to a cosmetic consultation

  • A photograph of yourself smiling that you like, and one you do not. Those two images say more than a paragraph of description.
  • A specific complaint. "The one tooth that sits behind the others" is workable. "A better smile" is not yet.
  • Your actual date, if there is one, so the sequence can be worked backward from it.
  • Any history of clenching or grinding, which affects how long thin porcelain lasts and whether a night guard belongs in the plan.
  • Questions about maintenance. Porcelain does not stain the way enamel does, but the natural teeth around it still will.

How far ahead should I book if I have an event?

Further than you think. Bring the date to a consultation and the sequence can be laid out against it honestly, including whether it is achievable at all.

Will whitening lighten my existing crown?

No. Whitening works on natural tooth structure only. If a front crown is part of the picture, the plan has to account for that.

Do veneers look artificial?

They look artificial when they are made too opaque, too uniform and too white for the face. Natural teeth vary in translucency from gum line to edge. Matching that is the job.

The route from Bass Lake
