What is happening below the gumline

Bacteria colonize the space between the gum and the root. In a healthy mouth that space is shallow and the body manages it. Once it deepens, a toothbrush physically cannot reach the bottom of it, and the bacteria there provoke an inflammatory response that dissolves the bone anchoring the tooth.

The gum can recover. The bone does not regrow on its own. Everything about treating this condition is therefore about stopping the loss early rather than repairing it afterward. How gum disease progresses.

The real commitment, spelled out

This is what the whole course looks like from a North Fork address, so you can weigh it properly.

  • An examination with full charting, which is where the readings and the imaging come from.
  • Scaling and root planing, often split across two appointments so each side can be numbed and cleaned unhurriedly.
  • A reassessment some weeks later to see which sites responded and which did not.

Maintenance visits can often be paired with other appointments so a trip covers more than one job. If a family member is due for a cleaning, book both on the same morning. If a restoration needs checking, do it in the same visit rather than a separate one.

The office will also book the full year in advance if you ask, and for anyone traveling this distance that is the single most useful thing you can do. Dates on a calendar survive busy months. Intentions to phone do not.

Fair questions to ask

What happens if I only come twice a year instead?

The risk is that sites reactivate between visits and are found later, deeper. It is a worse plan than three or four visits and a better plan than stopping. Have the conversation rather than quietly dropping off the recall.

Is this the same as a regular cleaning?

No. Maintenance includes charting each time and cleaning the root surfaces below the gumline, not only the visible part of the tooth.

Will my gums grow back after treatment?

Inflammation settles and tissue tightens, which sometimes makes recession look slightly more obvious rather than less. Lost bone does not return. Stability is the goal and it is an achievable one.

The route from North Fork

Road 200 links North Fork out to Highway 41, and from the highway it is north into Oakhurst and then Road 426 in town. Winter weather and fallen rock slow that road more often than anything else in our service area, so patients coming from North Fork are the ones we most often tell to leave margin.
