The interval is doing most of the work

After scaling and root planing, the bacteria that live below the gumline begin to repopulate the pockets. That is the reason treated periodontal patients are seen every three or four months instead of every six. Come at that interval and the readings generally hold. Slide out to a year and the pockets deepen again, quietly, in the way this disease does everything.

So the honest question at the start is not whether you want the treatment. It is whether the follow-up schedule is one you can actually keep from where you live. What happens at a maintenance visit

It is not the same appointment as a routine cleaning, even though it can look similar from the chair.

  • The pockets are measured again at six points per tooth and compared against the last set of readings.
  • Bleeding points are recorded, because bleeding is the early warning that a site is becoming active again.
  • Deposits are removed from the root surfaces below the gumline, not just from the crown of the tooth.
  • Any site that has deepened gets attention on its own rather than being averaged into a general clean.

Fitting a short cycle into a drive you already make

Three or four appointments a year sounds like a lot until you attach them to trips you were making anyway. The office will book the whole year at once if you ask, which is the single most effective thing a patient traveling any distance can do. A date on the calendar in advance survives a busy month. An intention to call does not.

Tell the front desk if a particular time of day makes the drive easier, and tell us if the weather up your road makes certain months unreliable. Both can be planned around when they are known in advance.
