Start by naming what bothers you
People arrive saying they want a nicer smile, which is not yet a plan. The useful version is more specific. The color has gone yellow with age. One front tooth sits behind the other. There is a chip on an edge that catches your lip. The gum line looks uneven in photographs. Each of those has a different answer, and some of them have an answer that costs no enamel at all.
Before anything cosmetic is planned, active decay and gum inflammation get dealt with. Building appearance on an unstable foundation is how expensive dentistry fails early, and it is the most common reason cosmetic work disappoints people two years later.
The options, and what each one costs you in tooth
Ranked roughly from least invasive to most. Less is usually better where less will do the job.
- Whitening
- Custom trays and supervised gel. Removes no tooth structure at all. Does not change the color of existing crowns or fillings, which is why shade decisions come before restorative work rather than after. More on whitening.
- Bonding
- Tooth-colored composite added directly to repair a chip or close a small gap in one visit. Reversible in the sense that little or no enamel is removed. Composite fillings.
- Veneers
- Thin porcelain facings bonded to the front of the teeth. Some enamel is removed, and that part does not come back, so the decision deserves time. More on veneers.
- Porcelain crowns

Color is decided in daylight, not under a lamp
Shade matching is done carefully because a tooth is not one flat color. It shifts from the gum line to the edge, it is partly translucent, and it looks different under the operatory light than it does outside on Road 426. Getting it right takes a little patience at the selection stage and saves a great deal of dissatisfaction afterward.
It also means sequence matters. Whitening comes before a front crown or veneer is made, because porcelain does not change color later. If the natural teeth are going to be lightened, they get lightened first and the new work is matched to the result.
